3 Tips on How to Improve your English

There are lots of us who speak perfectly good English. We were educated in English and use it every day. Our grammar is correct and we have what seems like a vast store of English words archived in our brains to be used at will. Still, we look at others around us and admire the way they speak, write and use the language. Hey, it’s my language too but somehow I don’t appear to be quite as good at it. How did they become so much more articulate than the average person?

Here are a few steps you can take to improve your English language ability.

Maybe you will impress your friends or possibly be offered that promotion.

1)READ and STUDY ENGLISH LITERATURE

This is the number one way to improve your English vocabulary, comprehension and writing style. Look at the great masters of prose and even well written contemporary fiction. Take note of how they phrase things. Check words you are unsure of in a dictionary. Make a list of new words and try to use them in a sentence during the following week.

2)USE STANDARD ENGLISH in BUSINESS SITUATIONS

Let’s face it local slang and dialect is great. It is easy and familiar. You can use short sentences and be understood. You can even use phrases which have a cultural or inside meaning to a select group. But do you want to talk with your business clients like that? What will they think of you if you over use localisms? It may be perceived by the person you’re speaking with that you’re being over-familiar with them. Or, if they are foreign clients they may not even understand and be too embarrassed to tell you. A new rule for you is to use standard English for business and keep the local slang and dialect for your family and friends.

3)CHOOSE A ROLE MODEL and COPY THEIR STYLE

Do you know someone who you’d like to emulate? It could be someone famous, a friend or a colleague. If so, listen carefully to them the next time.

Copy their diction and note down interesting word choices on their part.

You can even step-up and if you’re really serious invest in your education and take speech or pronunciation classes. That’s how actors do it.

Just a few definitive steps can make all the difference.

Good Luck!
